The Physical Therapist plans, directs, and administers Physical Therapy services in accordance with current applicable federal, state and local standar! ds, guidelines and regulations, to assure the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times. He/She must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to deal with patients, family and staff. He/She must be knowledgeable in all aspects of long term care and rehabilitative physical therapy and will work with the team to restore patients to previous state of physical fitness after surgery, illness or accident.
The ideal candidate will have a college diploma and a post-baccalaureate degree from an accredited Physical Therapy program and a license to practice Physical Therapy in this state is required. In addition, one to two years experience in a similar setting is expected and the skills to mange and supervise Physical Therapy Assistants.
The following is a representative list of duties and responsibilities associated with this position:
--The Physical Therapist will be involved the planning, development, organization, evaluation, and! directing of physical therapy activities, in accordance with ! current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long term care facility
-- Develop and maintain physical therapy standards
-- Develop standardized methods in which physical therapy will be accomplished
-- Maintain departmental policies and procedure, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control
-- Interpret physical therapy policies and procedures to personnel, residents, family members, etc., as necessary
-- Screen/evaluate patients to determine need for Physical Therapy
-- Maintain treatment records, patient files, plans of care and progress notes as required
-- Ensure business office receives charges for therapy services rendered to residents
-- Serve on, participate in, and/or attend various committees of the facility as required
-- Hire, orient, mentor and evaluate Physical Therapy Assistants
-- Interview patients to evaluate daily living skills and capacities and determine the ext! ent of abilities and limitations
-- Determine appropriate treatment, selecting activities and exercises based on medical and social history of residents
-- Participate in the development and implementation of residents assessments (MDS) and care plans, including quarterly and annual reviews
-- Schedule therapy services
-- Direct and assign Physical Therapy Assistants to carry out the plan of care on a daily basis
-- Brief patient on procedures involved in physical therapy and prepare necessary equipment
-- Transport patients to from therapy room/area
-- Demonstrate to patients, families, and staff, as necessary, the procedures involved in the treatment process
-- Promote participation and be able to motivate patient to attend individual and group recreational activities
-- Assist in ambulatory training as necessary
-- Recommend modifications and changes in the therapy/treatment as indicated
-- Ensure that all therapistsâ notes a! re informative and descriptive of the care provided and of the response! to the care
-- Participate in programs designated for in-service education and on the-job training
-- Attend and participate in workshops, seminars, etc., to keep abreast of current changes in your field, as well as to build skills and enhance growth and development
-- Update status of current rehab patients in weekly rehab meeting. Also must attend care plan conferences for rehab patients or send a designee to attend
-- Wear and/or use safety equipment and supplies (e.g., back brace, mechanical lifts, etc.) when lifting or moving residents
-- Ensure that the therapy area is clean and safe for patient comfort and convenience by assuring that necessary equipment and supplies are maintained
-- Maintain department equipment and supplies. Cares for and maintains equipment and supplies in good working order
-- Develop physical therapy plans for patients in coordination and conjunction with the assessment (MDS).
-- Ensure the patient's rights to f! air and equitable treatment, self determination, individuality, privacy, property and civil rights, including the right to wage a complaint are well established and maintained at all times
-- Treat all patients fairly, and with kindness, dignity, and respect
-- Communicate with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors
-- Maintain a liaison with the patients, their families, other departments, etc., to adequately plan for therapy needs
