For the position of Instructor in our Print studio, we are seeking a motivated, proactive and skilled colleague with professional experience in commercial digital print productions. A team member who can bridge production with experimental printing and is capable of teaching digital print techniques. We are looking for an instructor who is keen to help students develop new skills, and who is interested in the development of new and more sustainable ways of making print productions in the broadest sense of the term.
About the Willem de Kooning Academy
The Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, offers a variety of bachelor and master programs in the fields of visual culture, art, design, education in arts, and leisure management. The professions for which the academy prepares its students are at the heart of the creative industry. The art education programs play a key role in various knowledge domains including communication & technology, and art & social engagement. These education programs prepare students for a career in the cultural manufacturing industry: as artists, designers, makers, performers, educators, researchers, and organizers. The Willem de Kooning Academy’s curricula are based upon the independence of students working on projects in groups. In addition to theoretical knowledge and supervision by tutors, students also learn and apply skills by working in the Stations. The academy features several Stations, such as the Material Station, Publication Station, Interaction Station, Fabric Station, Drawing station, Living station Lab and the Image and sound station.
The Stations
The stations are centers of knowledge and expertise. They are both physical and non-physical locations that cover both traditional as well as innovative technologies. The stations are at the vanguard of the developments within the professional field and the processes of production that are relevant for the art and design practice. Stations are not only a space of execution and production, but also a space in which tutors, instructors and students question why we make, how we make and for whom we make. Stations are part of a collaborative effort (an educational instrument) to develop a student-driven curriculum that supports self-directed learning.
About the Publication Station
The Publication Station is an environment where students of various design disciplines can develop their physical and digital publications and are challenged to acquire new skills. The Publication Station distinguishes itself from a regular print space through its emphasis on research through making and practical applications. The Publication Station combines traditional print techniques with digitalization and sustainability. We focus on innovations in new hybrid, physical and digital publications. This includes strategies such as combining classic print techniques with coded design, to create new smart kind of publications.
The wide variety of learning goals of students in turn requires a broad professional knowledge from the team of instructors, in which each instructor has their own role and field of expertise. The focus of the team of instructors is to help students develop their ideas into working projects, providing individual consultations, station skills and lessons. For example, we currently provide skills courses in the following print techniques: screen printing, linoleum printing, etching and bookbinding. Additionally, we offer courses in Typography, Web platforms, HTML/CSS and After Effects.
About the Print studio
The Print studio is one of the three main studios of the Publication Station. It contains two A2 inkjet photo printers and two inkjet roll printers, 2 office copy machines, a Canon c600i printer, a flat-bed printer, various binding machines and an electric guillotine paper cutter. We teach and assist the students to print and make prototypes or small editions of their publications.

The Publication Station is looking for a colleague in their print studio in the position of instructor who has professional experience in digital printing and print productions. An enthusiastic team member who can bridge the production world with experimental projects and is capable of teaching digital printing techniques at all levels, from beginner to advanced. We are looking for an instructor who is keen to help students create and develop new projects, and who is interested in the development of new and more diverse ways of making publications in the broadest sense of the term.
The candidate is expected to take initiative and must be able to operate independently and to communicate clearly with colleagues and students. Affinity and experience with (art) education is a plus. It is crucial to be able to convert knowledge into advice that contributes to curriculum development within the Willem de Kooning Academy. As an instructor, you will provide instructions in digital printing techniques.
You have professional experience in a wide variety of digital print productions and publishing-related techniques, such as plotters and flat-bed printing. Knowledge in the prep-software such as InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat Pro is important. Experience with maintenance and problem-solving of printers and mechanicals is a big plus. Knowledge and experience with hand bookbinding is an advantage.
You guide students (both individually and in groups) in realizing their various projects. You also actively participate within a team of colleagues in the Station to create an inspiring working and learning environment. Your responsibilities include:
- Introducing students to a variety of digital printers
- Helping to keep software / presentation resources / documentation / resources up to date
- Introducing students to the process of preparing files for print
- Managing the facilities and premises
- Providing support to tutors
- Developing instruction lessons and skills workshops
Job requirements
- You have demonstrable work experience in print productions
- You have demonstrable knowledge and skills in the print production process
- You have digital skills in adobe InDesign and Photoshop or similar software
- Experience with Command Workstation en Mirage is an advantage
- You’re able to bridge production and experimental within digital prints
- You have an affinity for art, design and graphic prints
- You are experienced in, or have an affinity for, education
- You can guide and motivate students in classic and new ways of printing
- You are a team player, proactive, collaborative and responsible
- You have completed an education of at least HBO level
- You are able to express yourself in English in speech and in writing
- EU/ECC work authorization
Conditions
Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences offers a temporary contract for a year. The salary ranges from €2.756,90 to €3.691,27 gross per month (salary scale 8) for full-time employment, exclusive of additional 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Secondary benefits include professional training opportunities and an attractive pension scheme.
All staff members of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences must be able to submit a Certificate of Conduct (Verklaring Omtrent Gedrag, VOG) issued by the Dutch Minister of Justice and Security.
