You will be subject to a background/suitability investigation. DUTIES:
This position is located at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Clarksburg, WV. The Health Technician (Ophthalmology) provides clinical and administrative support in a wide variety ! of patient care and related activities in the eye clinic.
Major duties and responsibilities include:
Obtains patient ophthalmic histories;
Obtains visual acuity using a Snellen acuity chart or equivalent;
Obtains refractions and manifest refractions using automated equipment;
Determine the optical power of a patient's present lenses;
Measures intraocular pressure;
Instills diagnostic eye drops;
Tests patient's visual field;
Performs a variety of other eye tests;
Performs measurements of the corneal surface of the eye using the Keratonneter;
Performs eye glass repair and fittings;
Assists in preparing patients for laser surgery;
Assists in eye procedures in the clinic;
Performs user-level maintenance as prescribed by the manufactures on complex ophthalmic instruments and equipment;
Applies initial emergency ocular treatment, and
Pe! rforms other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule:! Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. Work schedule is subject to change depending on needs of the medical center.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. In order to meet the minimum requirements for the GS-6 leve! l you must meet one of the following:
EXPERIENCE : You must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service, providing clinical and administrative support in a wide variety of patient care and related activities in the eye clinic. This experience must be close to the work of this job and has given you the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of the Health Technician (Ophthalmology). Typically we would find this experience in work within this field or a field that is closely related to assistance in an eye clinic or surgical eye practice. Specialized experience should include knowledge of patient eye-care, ophthalmology and optometry related medical terminology, eye anatomy, diagnostic procedures and techniques and experience that included performing diagnostic tests on the eye, utilizing specialty ophthalmic instrumentation and equipment. NOTE:! A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. ! Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~
EDUCATION : You must have successfully completed one-half year of graduate education or 9 semester hours in courses that are directly related to the work of this position. Graduate courses may include those associated with the optometry or vision science in the medical or nursing profession. Transcripts must be submitted with application. COMBINATION : You must have a combination of successfully completed graduate education in course work directly related to the work of this position and specialized experience which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the eye
Knowledge of various eye conditions
Knowledge of various ophthalmology and optometry examination procedures.
Ability to interpret test results and data produced by ophthalmology and optometry instruments.
Skill in operating various ophthalmology and optometry instruments
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients e.g., wheelchair-bound patients. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing and reaching.
