DUTIES:
Major Duties/Responsibilities
~ Functions as a scrub person responsible for handling highly specialized instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures performed in the operating room, such as thoracic, vascular, urology, endoscopies, ENT, general, plastic, oral, ophthalmology, orthopedic and gynecology.
~ Maintains knowledge of anatomy and physiology sufficient to anticipate the needs of the surgeons and ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure.
~ Scrubs and sets up sterile field with all required specialized items necessary for each procedure.
~ Responsible for maintenance of aseptic technique of the complex sterile field.
~ Assists the surgeons by performing such procedures as preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, cutting sutures, preparing prosthetics, and surgical devices during procedures.
~ Other duties as assigned.
Tour of Duty : Monday - Friday, 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M., with rotating on-call duty; however, subject to change, depending on the needs of the service/medical center.
Additional Requirement
~ Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, or the ability to attain such within sixty days of entering on duty.

Experience Requirement
GS-6 & Above
General Experience - None.
Specialized Experience - One year equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements. Qualifying specialized experience for GS-4 and above includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health-aid performing duties such as:
~ Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
~ Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
~ Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
~ Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.
Education Requirement
At grades GS-4 and above, a portion of the education is usually directly related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of related courses are provided in the individual occupational requirements where applicable. However, agencies may require other courses if they are considered to be more related to the position to be filled. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable.
While the levels of experience shown for most positions covered by this standard follow the grade level progression pattern outlined in the table, users of the standard should refer to E.3. (o) in the "General Policies and Instructions" for guidance on crediting experience for positions with different lines of progression.
Training
Completion of appropriate training such as in-service training programs, training acquired while serving in the Armed Forces, and government-sponsored developmental training programs will be allowed credit on a month-for-month basis, generally through the GS-5 level. Such training meets general or specialized experience requirements depending upon its applicability.

Physical Requirements: Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of whom are in stages of unconsciousness. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the surgeon. Employee must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons, without compromising the principles of aseptic technique.
