West Virginia University is seeking a Chair for its Department of Pediatrics at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center who also will serve as physician in chief, West Virginia University Childrenâs Hospital. The position requires an academic pediatrician with strong interpersonal and leadership skills, experience in administration and a commitment to clinical care, service, teaching and research. Candidates must have a vision for the future of medical education, the discovery of knowledge and high performing patient centered care in the context of a growing health care delivery system. Some experience in developing strong relationships with community based physicians is strongly desired. Applicants must be board certified in Pediatrics.
The Department of Pediatrics at West Virginia University School of Medicineâs main campus in Morgantown includes over 200 faculty, residents/fellows, nurse practitioners, clinical/research/administrative staff. Over 60 faculty with primary appointment in the department represent nearly every pediatric subspecialty. We have full accreditation in our three training programs; pediatrics, medicine/pediatrics and neonatal/perinatal medicine. The WVU Childrenâs Hospital includes a 19 bed level I PICU, 39 bed level III NICU, 29 bed acute ward and a suite of 25 labor-delivery â" post-partum rooms for mothers and infants. Over 123,000 infant, children and adolescent visits occur annually at the WVU Healthcare facilities in Morgantown and our providers travel to 9 sites across West Virginia to provide annually over 2,000 outreach and telemedicine visits. In 2011-12 we had 26 active research awards representing over $4,350,000 in funding.

WVU is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a Research University (High Research Activity). The Health Sciences Center includes Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, and Public Health, each with their own research programs and each committed to interdisciplinary and translational health research. The campus includes a number of new and updated research laboratories and several dedicated research buildings.
The Health Sciences Center is in a period of sustained growth in teaching, clinical care and research. Additional faculty are being hired, more than 100 inpatient beds and new ambulatory facilities are planned, and an NIH-funded research building is under construction. More than $250 million in capital projects are either planned or under construction
