This position is located within Surgical Service at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. The VA Medical Center is located in the heart of West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle on 175 acres in historic Berkeley County. The Medical Center offers a comprehensive range of services, including internal medicine, ambulatory surgery, audiology and speech pathology, dental, nursing home, nutrition, podiatry, prosthetics, women's health, mental health, and rehabilitation medicine. Patient Care is provided through an integrated primary care concept, and each veteran is assigned to a team of health care providers who follow the patient's care both as an inpatient and an outpatient. The Medical Center has a service area of nearly 130,000 veterans in West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

DUTIES:
The Medical Support Assistant (MSA) typically performs work with some guidance by more experienced MSAs and supervision from the Surgical Service Business Manager. Direction may also be given from other members of surgery, such as the Service Chief or other providers. The Incumbent team member performs clerical work in support of the care and treatment provided to patients within Surgical Service and the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. As a Team Member of a fast paced specialty service, emphasis is placed not only on clerical duties, but also on providing outstanding customer service to our Veterans, patients, family members and visitors. Duties may include coordinating patient care between clinics, travel, escorts as well as appointment reminders via telephone or in person, schedules patient appointments and confirms that the patient has appointment information before being released. Other duties include receiving telephone calls from patients, caregivers, medical center staff, agency personnel, vendors, and others. The incumbent is responsible for managing the Electronic Wait List and verify/validate accuracy by ensuring patient was added/removed as appropriate per scheduling directors and ensures new patient consultation appointments are scheduled within Medical Center policy and per patient's desired date. The incumbent is responsible for assuring all appropriate lab/x-ray results are available prior to scheduled appointment and uses the computer and/or kiosk system to check-in patients in the appropriate clinic and informs the providers of their arrival and updates the patient's the patient's insurance information and will rotate through each specialty within Surgical Service for exposure to specialty clinics to ensure smooth transition and continuity in services and patient care when coverage is needed due to staffing requirements. Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
QUALIFICATIONS: To have basic eligibility, applicants must meet standards as outlined in the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standards Manual for General Schedule Positions, Group Coverage Qualification Standard, Technical and Medical Support Positions. This requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4). Examples of specialized experience may include: ability to operate computerized programs and databases, knowledge of basic medical terminology, ability to make appointments in a clinical setting, ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, and ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
Time in Grade Requirement: Current federal employees must have completed 52 weeks at the next lower grade level. Time in Grade requirements must be met within 30 days after the closing date of the announcement.
Education
GS-5: Four Years Above High School if using education to substitute for specialized experience.
